TOM WOPAT
EDUCATION/PERFORMANCE MASTERCLASS
Tom Wopat has a diverse program of material as a performer who may be best known for his starring role in the ’80s hit television series The Dukes of Hazzard. Tom is a Two-Time Tony Award Nominee, his extensive career from his television work in the ‘70s and ‘80s to high visibility Broadway roles in 1999’s Annie Get Your Gun and 2008’s Catered Affair (he received Tony Award nominations for both), as well as Chicago, Forty-Second St., Sondheim on Sondheim and more. Tom is an acclaimed recording artist, with a warm, engaging baritone voice. And the more one listens, the better it gets — from the way he finds the heart of a song’s story to his lyrical phrasing and his gently swinging, jazz-infused rhythms.

ABOUT THE MASTERCLASS
Tom Wopat's Masterclass is an intensive 2-day session designed for High School seniors and College students studying music and drama. The program combines elements of acting, live performance, and music, ending with an interactive performance.
DAY 1
DRAMA
Tom will meet with the Drama Department, critique prepared scenes and work with students participating in specific moments. This will be a 2 1/2 - 4-hour session ending with prepared musical duets. The best of which would be included in the final performance.
JAZZ
Later in the afternoon, Mr.Wopat and his musical director will rehearse the Jazz Ensembles on 6-8 arrangements. The arrangement will be chosen from Tom Wopat’s extensive American songbook repertoire. The High School or College class will have enough time to be familiarized with the material.
DAY 2
The afternoon will be used for soundcheck/rehearsal for the evening performance. Mr. Wopat’s bassist and drummer will also be present. The performance that evening will consist of two parts.
ACT I
Mr. Wopat and his trio will perform 45 minutes of his extensive repertoire. Just before intermission, the duet chosen by students the previous day will be performed.
ACT II
Tom and his trio will return for the second half to perform with the HS or College Jazz Ensemble. Tom’s bass player and drummer will alternate and mix with the players from the ensemble.
This program gives Mr. Wopat a chance to mentor young musicians and actors. The impact of this masterclass will be a great opportunity for students to see how professionals go about their work. The broad scope, which includes drama and jazz students, will be a positive addition to the High School/College program. It will make students more aware of their talents, as well as build participation in their future performances.
